For love of words

Over the past few days, I've been thinking a great deal about my publisher's gift of tens of thousands of books to the Florida schools.

Then, I began to wonder, what do I do to encourage a love of and support the written word? Particularly regarding kids?

Okay, so here we go:

List at least five things you do to support and spread a love of the written word, and tag five people. (If you list something that touches youngsters, you get a bonus letter!)

  1. I am a writer of fiction, science, and technology.
  2. I always keep the reader in mind and craft my prose accordingly (particularly for the last two).
  3. I go to schools and classrooms and talk about careers in writing/editing (being sure to mention more than just "author of books" route . . . after all, SOMEone writes the copy in a catalog, right?).
  4. Over the years, I've volunteered in elementary school classrooms, helping kids who are having difficulty reading.
  5. I've gone to the library regularly, all my life (so far!), and made sure my kids did the same.
  6. I've been a judge for poetry and young adult fiction awards.

Wow! Two bonus letters! I pick and "S" and an "R" (for the Silver Rush)!
Okay, I'm tagging ...
  1. Chester Campbell
  2. Kris Waldherr
  3. Adonya Wong
  4. Dani
  5. Marvin D. Wilson

Well you're certainly doing YOUR part! (smile) Good list of people you chose too. Thanks for thinking of me, Ann!

Oh, Ann, and I had said I was going to swear off these meme games, if that's the proper nomenclature. But encouraging a love of and support of the written word? Okay, I'll give it a shot.

I've been thinking a lot about those donated books, too. For all that the intent was based on astounding generosity, I DO hope your publisher develops a business model that eliminates remaindered books in the future. Hard on the environment, and we just might have to find better forms of generosity than actual books. Sad as that seems. It's a tough problem, that's for sure. I shudder to think how high the remaindered stacks from larger publishers reach. Those usually get shipped overseas for repackaging, then shipped back as low-cost specials. Book miles to and fro to add to the over-print damage. Ack.

You're about #11 on my list of memes-to-do. Hehe.

Happy Day and go read some ellipsis news:

I've always had a love of words and not numbers. That's why it will be so difficult to get my income tax stuff together pretty soon.

Hello Morgan,
I love numbers, but HATE doing the prep work for taxes. HATE HATE HATE. In fact, I think my next blog will be about "Death and Taxes." Love to write about the former (for fiction), can't stand the latter.

This is a great post to show the writers' appreciation and love for the written word. I write research paper assignments for a living and I guess, this is my way of showing my love and appreciation. I also have tutorials ESL tutorials.
